Interviews

We conduct Competency-based interviews. Competency-based interviews use questions which aim to find out how you have used specific skills in your previous experience and how you approach problems, tasks, and challenges. These interviews aim to uncover your past performance by asking open-ended questions (e.g., Tell us about a time...). Each question helps the interviewer learn about your past performance in a key skill area critical to success in the position for which you are interviewing.

A useful way to prepare for this style of questioning is to use the STAR technique. The STAR technique is a way to frame answers to each question in an organized manner that will give the interviewer the most information about your past experience. As you prepare to answer each question, consider answering the following components:

  • Situation: What was the situation in which you were involved?
  • Task: What was the task you needed to accomplish?
  • Action: What actions did you take?
  • Result: What results did you achieve?

Enterprise Rent-A-Car has a useful guide to Competency-Based Interviews on its website.
