On Wednesday 30 September 2026, from 00:00 hours, 24 of the 26 members of Glasgow Caledonian University's security team are expected to participate in industrial action, alongside facilities and student life.
This would leave only two members of the University's security team responsible for security provision across the University campus and Caledonian Court for a period of two weeks.
This substantial reduction in security staffing raises serious questions about the University's ability to maintain a safe and secure environment for students, staff and other campus users, particularly during evenings, overnight hours and other periods of reduced campus occupancy. This is particularly important for students living in Caledonian Court and those travelling through University property during evenings and overnight hours.
Students have raised concerns that the only contingency measure communicated to them to date has been the provision of a one-day first-aid training course for members of University management.
Students are therefore seeking urgent clarification on how the University intends to manage these foreseeable risks and fulfil its health and safety responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other applicable legislation.
All students at Glasgow Caledonian University are automatically members of GCU Students' Association.
This membership is free for current GCU students.
