Throughout December I organised and led a donation appeal at Glasgow Caledonian University for Help the Homeless Glasgow, and Jackie’s ‘Santa Sacks’ Appeal which this year was supported by Eiger Music a charity which teaches music to all. Jackie’s Santa Sacks helps the local elderly in Glasgow based on research by the Trussell Trust which indicates that elderly people are less likely to access foodbanks.
I’m pleased to announce that we were able to raise a total of over 700 items this year for both appeals, and through the generosity of GCU Students and Staff, we’ve won the challenge!
Donations for Help the Homeless Glasgow included items such as raincoats, toothbrushes, and scarves, and were handed out to the homeless around the city centre on Christmas Eve.
Donations for the Santa Sack appeal for Jackie’s Santa Sacks were made into hampers, and combined with donations from Strathclyde and Glasgow University, alongside GCU and GU’s Nursery and given to local community centres, and residential care homes!
The challenge, as I’ve said previously, isn’t about winning, but about giving back to the local communities, and I’m so proud to be part of a university and association which truly reflects the values of being part of something bigger, and an ethos for the common good. GCU have truly went out their way to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable Christmas this year, and a massive thank you to all involved.
The Santa Sacks Challenge was run in friendly competition with Strathclyde and Glasgow University, and I’d also like to congratulate Strathclyde and Glasgow on their hard work and dedication, as well as the great job they’ve done in raising items for communities this Christmas.
Best,
