In the upcoming General Election on Thursday 4th July 2024, British citizens, Irish citizens and qualifying Commonwealth citizens will be eligible to vote as long as they are registered to vote and have valid photo ID. Students and apprentices make up 10% of the voting population - we have the power to make ourselves heard.
You need to register to vote before 11.59pm on Tuesday 18th June 2024. Registering takes less than 5 minutes and all you need to register is your address and National Insurance number. Students are entitled to register at two addresses but can only vote at one. If you have a home and term-time address you should register at both, especially if you don't know where you'll be during the election day.
You now have to show photo ID to vote at polling stations to vote in the General Election. Your Student ID Card is not valid ID. NUS has teamed up with CitizenCard* (normally cost £18) to offer a FREE VOTER ID to any student that applies before 12noon on 20th June 2024. Use code 'NUS'.
International students from more than 70 countries and territories around the world are eligible to vote in the General Election. Use the NUS simple tool to use to check if you can vote in the General Election.
The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK.
* CitizenCard is not accepted as a form of voter ID in Northern Ireland – but you can still use it for other uses such as proof of age.
