They may take our code but not our quality

For this year NUS Scotland Conference, I had the opportunity to write and present a motion asking Scotland Conference to campaign and work with partners to ensure that the reform of the UK Quality Code will embed the Scottish practises towards improving learning and teaching.

Currently, Scottish’s Universities adopt a culture of engaging “students as partners” and using a “quality enhancement-led” approach when improving their standard learning and teaching for students. The Scottish sector is very protective of this culture as it has shown to be very effective on improving the Student Experience.

In short, the UK Quality Code governs how Universities throughout the UK approach of improving learning and teaching is being revised. Consultation with the four nations is ongoing, however the feedback from the Scottish sector is that the proposed Quality Code does not support the Scottish sectors current method of practise. This is evident through one example where the revised code considers enhancement-led approach as supplementary practise rather a core practise.

The motion was passed by NUS Scotland Conference and will form part of the work that is carried by NUS at a National Level.

This was a WIN for GCU Students but also a WIN for Students across Scotland!
