The GCU SA Freshers Guide - Travel And Transport

Saturday 19-08-2017 - 00:00

Congratulations, you’re heading to GCU!

We here at GCU Students’ Association have put together a wee handy guide to help you get ready for September, which we'll be sharing with you over the summer.

Following on from our last post we've gathered some information about travelling to and from uni.

Transport

Located in the city centre GCU can easily be accessed by public transport, so students are generally encouraged not to bring their cars on to campus.

16-25 Railcard

If you are aged between sixteen and twenty five or are a full-time student you can purchase a 16-25 Railcard and get a third off your rail travel. The card costs thirty pounds for one year, however, if you have an NUS Extra card you can save twelve percent. To check how much you would save with the rail card use the on-line Journey Planner.

Blue Badge Parking

Students who hold a Blue Badge can apply for a permit to use one of the disabled users parking bays on campus, however, they will need to go to the Transport Office to receive a parking permit.

Cycling

As the winner of Scotland’s first Cycle Friendly Campus Award, GCU is committed to promoting.

From free cycling maps to journey planners there is a range of support on GCU’s Cycling Forum, including details of their Cycle Buddy scheme.

You can sign up for e-mail updates for alerts when Dr Bike’s next “Fix Your Own Bike” session will be, or you can watch one of Make Good’s video tutorials.

Ladies can also look at joining GCU Belles On Bikes for free, tailored support; sign up for e-mail updates or join their Facebook group for more information.

Sustainable Travel

In addition to supporting cyclists GCU’s Sustainability team also have a range of tips to help you choose cheaper, more environmentally friendly ways to travel; you can sign up for e-mail updates or follow them on Twitter.

Parking

The university has arrangements with the car parks on Cambridge Street and at Concert Square where an all-day ticket is currently £7.00, and with the carp park at Dundasvale where an all-day ticket is currently £6.00; to validate your ticket you just go to the lobby in the Govan Mbeki Building or in the Security Office and use the machines there.

Remember that you can always look at joining our Official GCU Freshers 2017 group on Facebook or you can have a look at our next post!
