The GCU SA Freshers Guide - Finance And Funding

Sunday 13-08-2017 - 00:00

Congratulations, you’re heading to GCU!

We here at GCU Students’ Association have put together a wee handy guide to help you get ready for September, which we'll be sharing with you over the summer.

Following on from our last post we’ll be taking you through some of the different finance and funding options available to you as GCU students.

Finance

Although arranging to pay your tuition fees might not be the first things that come to mind when you receive your acceptance letter to study here at GCU it is probably one of the most important things you’ll need to do.

If you are a home student or coming over from the European Union you will need to check with SAAS to see what student funding options are available to you and to see if you are eligible to receive financial support.

You may be liable for paying your tuition fees if you are coming to GCU from England, Northern Ireland, or Wales, and you will need to get in touch with the relevant Student Finance body to check if you are eligible for any financial support.

If you are an international student and would like to know more about how to pay your tuition fees you can have a look on-line or you can speak to someone in our Student Finance team.

If you are responsible for paying your own tuition fees (for example, if you are on a postgraduate course) you can get more information about fees and funding on-line.

You can also read up on GCU’s Fees And Refund Policy for more information.

Funding

There are a range of bursaries and scholarships available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and you can always send an e-mail to scholarships@gcu.ac.uk if you would like to know more.

If you are having issues with funding your time at university you can arrange to speak with a member of the university’s Student Funding Team. To do this just book an appointment online or attend one of their daily drop-in sessions; these run from 10;00 to 16:00 from Monday to Thursday, and from 11:00 to 15:00 on Fridays. You can also call them on 0141 273 1376 or send an e-mail to funding@gcu.ac.uk.

If you are finding it hard to pay your bills (including accommodation, study, travel, and utility bills) you can always speak to someone in the Student Funding Team about applying to the Discretionary Fund for financial help.

The Student Funding Team can also help you apply for help with childcare costs (these costs may include after-school care, a child-minder, or nursery costs); if you are a UK lone parent then you can look at applying for the Lone Parent Childcare Grant.

Bank Accounts

Designed with students in mind many banks offer a range of current accounts with interest free overdrafts (and a whole host of freebies) each year; when shopping around remember to check for things like in-credit interest and if there are any unarranged overdraft fees.

Remember that you can always look at joining our Official GCU Freshers 2017 group on Facebook or you can have a look at our next post!
