Student Mental Health Workshop

Wednesday 09-01-2019 - 09:32

Earlier this year I was able to present (and write!) my first ever workshop on student mental health.

The workshop looked at statistics both at GCU and in the sector on mental health, and the disproportionate negative impact we can observe in the student population. Studies have stated that up to 78% of Students experienced mental health concerns whilst in higher and further education, and up to 80% of students experienced stress, 55% reported feeling anxiety, and 49% reported feeling depressed.

This was delivered as a part of the Trimester A, Academic Rep Gathering, and focused on gathering input from our academic representatives into the work we’re doing to support student mental health at Glasgow Caledonian University and GCU Students’ Association through our Student Mental Health Agreement.

When seeking support for poor mental health, 21% of students disclose to their university or students’ union to seek mental health support, and it’s for this reason we thought it was essential to come together to work in partnership to develop a Student Mental Health Agreement, where both institutions can come together to provide a more holistic support provision at GCU.

This is part of the Student Mental Health Agreement project (which is co-ordinated by Think Positive and NUS nationally) and has even been presented at National Conferences!

If you have any questions, or want to become involved, get in touch with me at President@GCUStudents.co.uk, and see our work at https://www.gcustudents.co.uk/advice-centre/student-mental-health-agreement.

The workshop will be available again on the 27th of March 2019, during Trimester B, at the Academic Rep Gathering!
