New Societies funding model

Societies council

This academic year, Societies Council have implemented the New Funding model which was passed by Student Voice. Considering these changes; we thought it may be useful to put together a short blog which outlines this new model.

Firstly; the basics…

Every society is entitled to funding from the SA. This funding will be allocated dependant on their place on the league table with other societies; with those being higher in the structure being eligible for more funding. Funding is based on the previous year’s performance; with scores being calculated at the end of T2 from the previous academic calendar.

There are various different criteria used to determine funding; this is shown below –

This new model helps to enable growth in smaller societies; and encourage partnership collaboration between societies and personal development with volunteers in the Students' Association.

Supplementary to this funding, Societies are also eligible to apply for funding from the Dragons Den pot.

Dragons Den

The Dragons’ Den fund is an additional pot of money for societies to apply for outside of their regular activities.

Applications can be from one society or multiple societies, and each society can apply once per trimester. Unsuccessful applications can be appealed.

If your application is successful, you will then be invited to present to a panel. Your presentation should be no longer than 10 minutes – we will provide a projector and computer if you need it. The panel may ask further questions if they feel it’s appropriate.

The Panel will discuss your application and decide how much to allocate. You will be informed by the Societies Co-Ordinator of how much you have been allocated and any comments. Please note, the submission of your application does not guarantee that you will receive the amount you have requested.

To be eligible for Dragons’ Den, an application must demonstrate the following:

  • It must fall in line with the Students’ Association’s Values
  • It must demonstrate that it will promote a greater sense of community
    • This could be within your society, with other groups, or in the wider community
  • It must provide evidence for costs included in the application
  • It must show willingness and/or evidence of part-funding

Sponsorship

Societies are also able to obtain funds through participating in our sponsorship agreement with the Students' Association sponsors. The main sponsors are Re:Union Bar, Kokomo & Bamboo.
