GCU Sports Awards 2024-25

Five Hundred and Fifty-Five students attended the Annual GCU Sports Awards Ball at the Hilton Glasgow on the 12th April 2025. The following awards were announced on the night.

Colours Certificates

These are awarded for exceptional service to a sports club, including culminating years of service or active involvement as a committee member. 

The winners of this award are:

Caitlin Dinnen, Weightlifting

Cameron Cochrane, Men’s Rugby

Catriona Gallagher, Women’s Rugby

Chris Scullion, Men’s Rugby

Dougie Currie, Men’s Rugby

Blues Certificates

These are presented for consistent, exceptional sporting performance or accomplishments.

 

The winners of a Half Blues award are:

Angus Crawford, Fencing

Charlotte Terry, Women’s Football

Elki Little, Fencing

 

The winner of a Full Blues award this year is:

Ellie Wylie, Women’s Volleyball

 

Best 1st Year Award

This award is presented to the 1st year student who has made the most outstanding contribution to a sports club this year.

The shortlist for this award was:

Elki Little, Fencing

Emma Hamilton, Cheerleading

Max Strachan, Men’s Hockey

Molly Tolson, Snowsports

Rory Doyle, Weightlifting

 

The winner of GCU Best 1st Year student is Elki Little, Fencing.

Elki has immersed herself in GCU Fencing, bringing enthusiasm and dedication to the women’s team, attending every match and playing a key role in securing 3rd place in Scotland. She has actively supported beginner fencers, helping to create a welcoming and encouraging training environment.

 

 

Coach of the Year

Awarded to the student coach who has given exceptional service and outstanding voluntary commitment throughout the year.

The shortlist was:

Lia McGrath, Netball

Nicole McPhail, Cheerleading

Taylor Langmuir, Snowsports

 

The winner of GCU Coach of the Year is Lia McGrath, Netball.

Lia has provided exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication in providing an outstanding experience to all netball club members. Plus, she played and coached the Netball Team to win the BUCS Conference Trophy final.

 

 

Best Volunteer Award (Ross Baillie Award)

Presented to the student who has given the most outstanding voluntary commitment and contribution to a sports club.

The shortlist was:

Issy Tanner, Women’s Hockey

Jaia Blair, Women’s Rugby

Joseph Abbot, Weightlifting

Sam Trombley, Mountaineering

Teigan Clark, Cheerleading

 

The winner of Best Volunteer is Jaia Blair, Women’s Rugby.

Jaia has been an outstanding volunteer for the Women’s Rugby Club, recruiting players, getting sponsors, supporting the committee, ordering new kit, plus leading the team to an undefeated winning season.

 

 

Sportsperson of the Year

Presented to the student who has had the most outstanding sporting performance or achievement this year.

The shortlist was:

Angus Crawford, Fencing

Charlotte Terry, Women’s Football

Ellie Wylie, Women’s Volleyball

Emma McBride, Equestrian

Euan Cowan, Men’s Hockey

Josh Taylor, Badminton

Rosie Broadhurst, Women's Rugby

 

GCU Sportsperson of the Year is Josh Taylor, Badminton.

Josh reached the quarter-final stage in the mixed doubles and semi-final stage in the men's singles of the Scottish University Championships. Josh is ranked 6th for mixed doubles and 4th for men’s doubles in Scotland.

 

 

GCU Most Improved Club

This award is for the club that demonstrates the greatest overall improvement over the course of the year in comparison to last year.

The Shortlist was:

Badminton, Dance, Equestrian, Golf, Men’s Hockey, Netball, Tennis

 

The winner of the Most Improved Club is Equestrian

The club have increased membership to the highest levels for 7 years, 40 people attending try outs and tasters, there’s been triple the demand for lessons this year and success in competition, plus an improved team spirit for competition and social members.

 

 

GCU Team of the Year

This is awarded to the team with the best overall sporting performance and the shortlist is:

The shortlist was

Cheerleading Level 1 Cheer Royal, Dance Contemporary Team, Equestrian 1st, Fencing, Netball 1st, Women’s Rugby 1st, Women’s Volleyball 1st

 

The winner of GCU Team of the Year is Women’s Rugby

GCU Women’s Rugby are undefeated in all BUCS league and cup competitions this year. The team scored a massive 323 points in the league alone.

 

 

Club of the Year

Awarded to the sports club that has had the most extraordinary year, considering activities, profile, fundraising and development.

The shortlist was:

Cheerleading, Women’s Football, Mountaineering, Men’s Rugby, Snowsports

 

The winner of GCU Club of the Year is Men’s Rugby

The club have their highest membership for 7 years, and consistently high attendance at training and socials. The club have been collaborating with other GCU sports clubs, bought new kit, increased sponsorship, plus they won their BUCS League. The club raised £2,000 for PAPYRUS, and £3,000 for Movember plus they have been volunteering at Milton Food Hub and Community Garden.
