G-cal Muay Thai Club have continued to go from strength to strength. The club has attracted more members, held spectacular fight nights and have smashed every goal set for the year.

For the second year running our Muay Thai team have reached the highest membership count out of all the sports clubs at the university, securing a massive 84 members. This increase in participation is really inspiring and it’s been such a joy to see the team continue to grow. Traditionally male dominated, Muay Thai set out to encourage more female participants this year to allow for a greater representation of the sport at GCU. This was a success as the female presence in the team has increased from last year and, for the first time, have secured a committee consisting of more female members than male for next year. You go, girls!

Committee member Steven Millar commented: “We're really happy to see more women getting involved in the sport as well as the running of the club”.

The club learn and develop their Muay Thai skills at weekly training session's with the help of their coaches from the Grip House. Members who express an interest in representing their team at an inter-club event will receive extra training until the team are confident it is safe for them to compete. Don’t worry, if you’re just looking to get some exercise then there’s no pressure to compete - I’ve been reassured that training is very inclusive for all abilities and your face shouldn’t take too many hits!

Throughout the year the team successfully represented GCU at three inter-club events, two at Glasgow University and one at Strathclyde. Once again, the team hosted their ‘Homecoming II fight night’ competing against GU, Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Stirling. For the second year running, the fight night was the largest student ran event on campus, with a massive 360 people turning up to support our team. Muay Thai also hosted a successful charity ceilidh, which raised a lot of money for Cancer Research UK and added a great social event to the calendar at the same time.

Speaking of the future, the Muay Thai committee members commented: “Next year we are looking to increase our membership even more to once again be GCU’s largest sports team. To achieve this, we are looking to invest in new training equipment to ensure a safer and more comfortable training experience for our members. Next year we are hoping to get our members more involved in socials outside of uni and training time such as climbing/paint balling/go carting etc, not every social needs to be a night out!”

Fighters this year were:

Gabe Fullerton, Roch Foster, Kelly Skea, Rauri Mason, Mario Sampson, Sarah Simpson, Robbie Stewart, Marcus Wong, Gavin Mariotti and Adam Nordstrom

Committiee members 2017/18 were:
