In September, our Gaelic Women’s football team started their year with their come & try session, which was a great way for people who have never seen the sport before to get an introduction as it runs a little bit different from the modern football rules.. This year, the team secured players from different parts of Scotland and even America! There was an initiation night organized shortly afterwards so current players could meet all the new players and welcome them into the club involving lots of shots and forgotten memories!

Throughout the year the club have been very proactive in organising and playing in games and ensuring there’s still a strong social aspect to the team by planning a full social calendar!

In October, the team took part in the mini 7s competition in Stirling which was a great competitive game. In December, the team hosted their annual ‘Christmas Jumper Pub Crawl’ to raise funds for the club which is always a big success and one of the best club social nights of the year! At the end of first semester, the team kept the Christmas spirit by feasting on a Christmas dinner in Malones, inflicting many hangovers and food comas.

British Championships were also this year. The club travelled down to Manchester in March and beat both Manchester and Birmingham teams to the top group. They got through to the semi-final and just missed out on the final by 1 point, which is still an amazing achievement in itself!

At the end of every season the club have their own awards night to acknowledge the players that have made a big impact throughout the year both on and off the pitch, the results were…

Best newcomer: Leah Hegarty,

Most Improved: Eileen Leen,

Best British Championship performance: Monica O'Connor, Most committed: Monica O'Connor,

Player of the year: Jane Ward

And a few more awards I’d cringe to mention…

Committee member, Monica O’Connor commented, “Overall we had a very successful year; we had roughly 30 players which is great to see for a foreign sport! Next year we hope to build on this success and get plenty of new players as we will be losing a lot of 4th years! We'd like to thank Liberty Living student accommodation for sponsoring us again this year and providing us with new gear bags and to Kevin Maher and Daniel McGaughey for training us all year”.

Committee Members 2017/18:

Hannah Herron, Brionan McAleer, Monica O'Connor, Bethan Doney, Dearbhla Ahern, Erin Foley, Eileen Leen

Team Captain: Jane Ward
