From splits to handstands, GCU Wolves Cheer have continued to impress - countless competitions and social events, the cheer team have had a phenomenal year.

They kick-started their year at the Fresher’s Fayre with their Cheer stall and ‘Come and Try’ taster session which went on to secure 30 members who would attend practice’s for the rest of the year. The team managed to double their participation rates from last year and are looking forward to seeing how the club can continue to progress and grow over the next few years. During Fresher’s week, the club hosted a ‘Barbie’ themed night out to bring together members old and new by bonding through vodka mixers and tequila shots!

Team training nights are all about fun and stretching! For the first half of the year, the club focus on learning the routines they will perform at events and competitions and the second half of the year is dedicated to practicing and perfecting new skills and stunts to wow the crowd.

Throughout the year the club have had many team fundraisers starting with a classic bake sale in the Re:Union Bar, followed by festive fundraisers from their Christmas Quiz night to a Christmas karaoke night out. They have another karaoke social planned after exams are over so grab your mics and start your vocal warm-ups!

The club also took matters into their own hands in terms of creating events. With the Strathclyde Warriors help, they created the first ever Scottish University Cheerleading Championships, which is a massive achievement. This event welcomed over 200 athletes participating from 7 different universities. This event was huge and the activities department really applaud the girl’s tireless work to make this event successful and look forward to this becoming an annual event. The squad placed 2nd in their division in this competition which was an amazing achievement.

The club also entered an online competition to be in a national advert and win a cash prize of £3000. This was for VOXI which is Vodafones new student mobile network. The squad won this competition by a landslide though online voting and now have access to additional funding for the club account.

The team have had such a fab year and are looking forward to next year echoing the same.
