What comes into your mind when you hear Black History Month?
BHM as I like to call it for short means a lot to me. I like to see it as a month to celebrate black culture, food, music and achievements. I mean, we get to acknowledge our culture and music all of the time but in October, it is special as we have a platform to celebrate these every day of the month.
This year’s theme: “Time for Change; Action not words” makes us think about certain actions we need to put in place to ensure inclusivity and trust me; the GCU Students’ Association and the University as a whole are always working to ensure that we have an inclusive environment.
The highlight of this year’s black history month was our Afro-Caribbean Culture Night that took place in our RE-Union Bar at the Students’ Association Building. This event highlighted traditional wears, themed food, music and culture. We had 83 people in attendance making for an incredibly successful and inspiring night.
One of my manifesto objectives is to promote multicultural Diversity, which I believe this event to be a great stepping-stone for future events and campaigning.
I hope you all had a great month and enjoyed yourself at the event.
