Advice Centre: Student Failed an Exam

This story is based on a real student who provided consent for their story to be shared but whose name was changed to protect their anonymity.

Tom, a 3rd Year student from the School of Computer, Engineering and Built Environment, failed the final attempt of an exam and was transferred to a generic third year degree and would not be able to graduate with his intended Honours degree.

Tom independently submitted a Mitigating Circumstances form for this exam, which was rejected. He received advice from his department to submit a Retrospective Mitigating Circumstances, which was also rejected. The student was very depressed about these outcomes and it took him several weeks until he felt ready to reach out to the Advice Centre, in the Students’ Association, to see if anything else could be done.

He then sought advice from the Advice Centre and the Student Adviser explored Tom's situation and reviewed the two forms he had already submitted. He was advised of his grounds for an Academic Appeal and was supported by the Student Adviser in drafting the appeal form. As Tom was outwith the 2 week deadline, the Student Adviser enabled him to explain the reason for the application being late.

Whilst this will not necessarily be the same outcome for every student, in this case the academic appeal for the student was successful. He was allowed another attempt at the exam and thus an opportunity to graduate with his intended degree.

The student said "I'm happy to inform you that my academic appeal was accepted. I would like to thank you so much for understanding and helping me, may you continue to help others and may God bless you".
